extremely disappointed in big sky tools received planer tried it and had two lines running down the right side of every piece of wood i planed. the cutter blades had two chips in them. i called customer service and she said they would send new blades out. it has been three weeks and i still have not received them. i bought this
tool to finish a project and know i cannot finish it without the new blades

well I have used my planer on a couple of small projects. It seems to be working fine and does a good job. Like to get started doing some bigger projects. So far so good.

Initial impressions:
The planer arrived well-packaged and padded in a sold, heavy duty box, which is a good thing becuase this thing is pretty heavy (80+lbs). Everything arrived very clean and free from any kind of visible damage. Overall, I would have a hard time telling the difference between this planer and a brand new one.
Setup was very straight forward. The only step that needs to be completed prior to use was attaching the height adjustment handle to the top of the planer. Easy day. I also later added the dust collection attachement to the back of the planer. This is also a pretty simple operating; three machine screws and done.
After (quick and easy) setup, I made a few test cuts in some spare pieces of pine and maple. Initially, the planer left several fine lines, parallel to the direction of feed, on the test boards. I inspected the blades and found that all three had small nicks in them. I gave customer service a call and had a new set of blades in the mail in a couple of days; great customer service. Installing the new blades was surprisingly fast and simple. The only required tool for this operation is included and there is a storage spot for it on the top of the cutter assembly, which makes it difficult to lose.
Once the new blades were installed, I made a few more test cuts with excellent results. This planer can handle cuts on solid maple 1x6s up to about a 16th deep with no real issues. There is some tearout with cuts that deep, but a 1/64 finishing pass or light sanding clears it up. Overall cut quality and accuracy is very good with little to no snipe. The dust attachment also comes in handy. I use it with a shopvac and it eliminates a lot of cleanup.
Things that I don't like:
-The dust attachment prevents the outfeed table from folding up, increasing the overall footprint of this tool for storage. Additionally, since it is held in by screws, it does not remove quickly and easily. In addition to the added footprint, it also makes the dust attachment more dufficult to access when it gets clogged. Fortunately, clogging seems to be relatively rare.
Overall, this is a great tool, especially for the price. It adds a lot of versatility to my woodworking in terms of material selection and saves a lot of sanding time. If you're in the market for a portable planer I think you'd be hard pressed to do better in this price range.
